Samy’s Camera Invites the Community to Photo Camp Event

Samy’s Camera, the largest imaging retailer on the West Coast, is offering 15 students, selected by Virginia Road Elementary School, a course in photography at no cost to the students or the school. Samy’s Camera will showcase all the students’ artwork in a silent auction gallery show. All proceeds raised will be donated back to the school, courtesy of Samy’s Camera. The ceremony will be held at Virginia Road Elementary School on Thursday June 23rd at 2:30pm.  Parents and the community at large will have the opportunity to see the fruit of the children’s labor. The camera retailer will gift each student a diploma, a DVD slideshow and a personalized photo book with 40 photos taken by their graduating class.

Samy’s Camera Photo Camp is an 8-week course that covers the fundamentals of photography, including perspective, framing and composition. Each week, instructors delve into the various fields of photography, including sports, fashion, food, photojournalism and more. Each student was equipped with a digital point-and-shoot camera, camera case, 2GB card, and a Samy’s Camera Photo Camp t-shirt and hat. All to keep!

Shoot Vintage at Heritage Square

Imagine stepping through time into historic Southern California  between the Civil War and the early 20th Century.  Now imagine being able to spend a day photographing the elegant buildings and people that populated the era — all while learning about location shooting and outdoor lighting!

Samy’s is bringing that opportunity to life!  Spend the day with models dressed in vintage costumes to complement the beautiful Heritage Square Museum Location, with their restored Victorian homes and buildings, generously provided for our students by the Museum.

This workshop will focus on the intricacies of shooting on location and finding the sweet spots within a lighting situation. Instructors E.K. Waller and Brian Leng will demonstrate and students will shoot using overhead silks, diffusion modifiers, fill cards and on-camera flash.

Whether you like shooting models or architecture, you won’t want to miss this immersive photo experience taking place Sat, June 25, 9am-4pm at the Heritage Square Museum  located off the Pasadena freeway at Avenue 26th.  The fees for this photo workshop cover all day shooting at Heritage Square Museum, photo instruction from E.K. Waller and Brian Leng, a delicious catered lunch, and a make up artist with models to pose and photograph. Weekly Roundup June 6-12

This week leads off with a great new Lensbaby workshop where each participant will be assigned their own Lensbaby Composer for their camera.  We have Lensbabies for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Pentax.  This is a great workshop to learn about selective focus techniques and how ton achieve that sought after artistic out of focus look.  Tuesday 6:00 PM to 10PM Register Here.

Next up is Samy’s own Deborah Cloyd for a seminar entitled How to Fund your Wanderlust: Travel writing, Art Photography, Reality Television, and a Novel.  This seminar coincides with her new book release from MIRA Books/Harlequin.  She will share how to your vacations funded by travel writing and photography gigs.  Thursday 7-9PM Register Here

The weekend is jam packed with great workshops.  First up on Saturday is Photographing the Gardens at Huntington Library.  This class will start off in the Samy’s Pasadena classroom and then move to the Huntington Library where attendees will have the opportunity to shoot with instructor Art Ramirez on hand to answer questions.  10:30-4:30pm Register Here

At the Fairfax location on Saturday is a free Spyder event with Live Printing Session.  Josh Fischer, education manager at Datacolor, and DPA Instructor, Jimmy Fikes will show you how to use Spyder color calibration tools to preserve the true colors present from camera, to monitor and thru to print. Sunday literally starts off with a bang when Samy’s employee and Dodger photographer Pat Gee shares his secrets to shooting great fireworks images like those hanging at the Dodger’s cooperate offices.  This workshop starts on Sunday where Pat will show you his work and talk about how he captured his iconic fireworks shots. The following Friday the group will meet at Elysian Park overlooking Dodger Stadium to shoot the spectacular fireworks display.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from a pro like Pat and to shoot Dodgers fireworks from an amazing vantage point.  Seminar is from 1:00-3:00PM on Sunday and continues Friday 6:00-10:00PM.  Register here.

Welcome to Samy’s Showcase!  This new endeavor will feature a Samy’s employee every month – to highlight their accomplishments, tell their ‘Samy story’ and history, and share their specialized knowledge on different topics in photography.

Outdoor Photo Show and Dance Celebration at the Music Center Plaza

Samy’s is pleased to announce a great outdoor photo related event taking place this Friday and Saturday from sunset until 10PM at the Music Center Plaza downtown LA .  This is the culmination of the 24/1 day in a life photo contest that we sponsored by providing $300 gift cards and 6 colorful new Tenba Vector camera bags (courtesy of the Mac Group). This outdoor event promises to be a blast with dancing and music accompanying the projected slide shows.
