This Week At Samy’s EDU March 12-18 2012

I start this weeks classes off with Intro to DSLR Video – March 14th 2012 at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles.  Learn how to get the most from your HDSLR camera including how to stabilize and accessorize your shooting rig for a successful outcome. Canon 5D MKII menu set up will be covered in a step by step fashion after which each student will have the opportunity to shoot a model with a Redrock Micro Field Cinema rig on a Manfrotto Fluid tripod head as well as a hand-held shoulder configuration.  This intro class is for any photographer who doesn’t want to get left behind during this small camera video revolution.  Register here.

We have two great classes on Saturday starting with Sony Alpha School – March 17th at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles.  Transform your snapshots into photographs with this informative and inspiring class presented by Sony digital imaging expert Todd Tieman. During this two hour course you’ll learn digital photography essentials, the basics of your Sony DSLR camera, and how to utilize compositional techniques that make a photograph memorable. Also on Saturday is Understanding Your Nikon DSLR with Joe Barnet – March 17th at Samy’s Camera in Santa Ana.  In this course we will discuss the very basic operation of Nikon DSLR cameras, such as setting your cameras resolution, basic flash operation, basic menu functions, memory cards, storage and more.  This class will cover Nikon DSLR cameras, so whether you purchased the camera for yourself, or received it as a gift, this is the class to get all of your questions answered!  Register here.

On Sunday we are launching Macro Photography Workshop – March 18th at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles.  Enter the world of macro photography with instructor Art Ramirez as your guide.  Learn how to capture close up images with macro lenses, filters, special flash systems and tripods using macro attachments.  Whether you use a macro lens, close-up filters or simply move in as close as you can, you will learn the tools necessary to capture details hat you didn’t know were possible.  This is a hands-on shooting class with practical setups using available light and strobe.  Register here.

Another Sunday class is Fine Art Travel Photography with Mark Edward Harris – March 18th 2012 at Samy’s Los Angeles.  This workshop explores how to create fine art travel photography – images that go far beyond the “I was here” photograph. Photographers working in either digital or film will learn how to create beautiful landscapes and townscapes, as well as powerful environmental portraits and photo essays – pictures that tell a story. After a presentation of travel images by award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris, students will put ideas into practice with technical aspects such as the use of “fast” lenses, filters and the creative use of flash on location. Furthermore, participants will learn how to approach newspapers and magazines with travel story ideas and how to bring individual projects into fruition. Rounding up the weekend Sunday is Introduction to Canon DSLRs – March 18th at Samy’s Camera in Santa Ana.  This is one of Samy’s most popular classes.  Canon rep Mike Monezis walks attendees through the various Canon DSLR menus and shows you how to get the most from your Canon DSLR.  Seminar covers Canon DSLR features, menus, and software.  Cameras covered as a group include Rebels, 60D, 7D, and 5D Mark II.

This Week At Samy’s EDU Feb 20-26 2012

Adobe Lightroom is the first class up this week and as usual it is sold out.  Lightroom has quickly become our most popular digital imaging class so sign up early if you want to learn how to manage and process your images from our in-house expert Natasha Calzatti.

Saturday Paul Van Allen will be leading his traveling Wireless Flash Workshop workshop Getting More from the Nikon Wireless Flash System.  Paul will walk you through the settings to make your Nikon a lean mean wireless flash machine. The fun really gets going as you practice what you just learned… With YOUR cameras! That’s right, you are going to shoot pictures… Amazing pictures! Also on Saturday is Beginning Portrait Lighting with Keith Payson at Samy’s Camera in Culver City.  Not only does Keith work in the Pro Department at the Culver City store but he also teaches lighting and portraiture in the Culver EDU classroom.  Keith will guide you through the general principles of basic lighting and then show you how to use your newfound knowledge and techniques to take great portraits of your family and friends. Whether you are using sunlight or strobe-light, on-camera flash or constant light, you can learn what seeing lighting is all about and immediately start to take better pictures.  Register here.

Santa Ana has Photoshop CS5 Level One with Art Ramirez on Saturday.  This is a three hour course which includes lecture, hands-on training and demonstration of Adobe Photoshop CS3. Art will supply images, or you are welcome to bring your own files to work on. Photoshop terminology, organizing files, file corrections, basic photo restoration, usage of some of the Photoshop tools, and cropping and resizing images are some of the topics discussed in this class.  Register here.

Pasadena will host Photographing Children in Natural Light with George Simian on Saturday Feb 25th.  This is one of our most popular classes.  George goes over example photos and portraiture techniques in the classroom then the class heads outside to photograph children in natural light settings using reflectors.  Parents can not only learn to shoot great images of their kids but they get an amazing portrait out of the deal too since many of the shots will look like professional portraits.  Register here.

Back by popular demand the Nikon D7000 Class with Paul Van Allen Wednesday February 15th at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles.  Paul will show you the features for Nikon’s D7000 including an overview of the HD video capabilities of this exciting camera. Thursday we have a great intro to on camera flash surprisingly called:  Intro to On Camera Flash Photography – February 16th at Samy’s Los Angeles.  This is only the second time we’ve run this class and last time we had over 50 people.  This 2 hour seminar is designed to get you up and running with your portable on-camera flash. You will learn how to get the most from your portable flash – hint, it usually means moving it off your cameras hotshot.  Register here.

We are doubling down and raising one with Gregg Cobarr classes this week.  On Saturday Gregg starts off in the morning at the Fairfax location and then drives down to Santa Ana teaching Better Photos Now at both locations in one day.

Last but not least is George Simian’s 2 day studio lighting class Pro Lighting Fundamentals – February 19th and 26th, 2012.  This hands-on shooting workshop takes place at Smashbox studios.  Students learn about the fundamentals of lighting including how to set up and light with Profoto strobes.  Students will learn to use light modifiers including soft boxes and reflectors to shoot models.  There isn’t a better lighting workshop around.  Students will bring their own cameras and are required to understand how to use them in manual settings.  A basic understanding of digital workflow is also recommended.  Register here.

This Week At Samy’s EDU Feb 6-12 2012

This week starts off with the much anticipated Sony Alpha School.  A lot of customers bought Sony Alpha and NEX cameras over the holidays and this is the class to get them up and running.

Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers Level One – February 8th, 2012. Samy’s Los Angeles.  This hands on beginners workshop will show you just the things you need to know to start feeling confident in your Photoshop skills. Realizing that Photoshop is a huge program with a lot of tools, filters, adjustments, palettes, and menu items etc… We will cut through the complexity and just shows you exactly what you need to know to hit the ground running in Photoshop. Adobe Photoshop CS5 for Photographers Level Two – February 9th, 2011. Samy’s Los Angeles.  This class builds on the fundamental foundation of the Adobe Photoshop for photographers – I class.  The aim of this class is to raise the participant’s knowledge to a more professional level of digital workflow.  Be ready to up your game as a digital photographer.  Register here.

Photographing Children in Natural Light with George Simian – February 11th at Samy’s Los Angeles.   This one-day workshop starts at noon, with a couple of hours of planning and practicing: we will cover capturing children candidly or engaging them directly with the camera; the quality of soft vs. hard light, the direction of the light, and the use of reflectors; and the best camera settings for more effectively focusing attention on the child.  At 2PM we will move to a nearby park, and start photographing children, working in small groups, and rotating locations, that everyone has a chance to photograph different children in different activities.  By 4PM we’ll be back in the classroom, reviewing the images made, and discussing what approaches worked best! We are counting on participants to either bring their own children, or to ask friends to bring their children – they will be rewarded with all the successful images made of each child!  Register here.

The Landscape with Hernan Godoy – February 11th at Samy’s Camera in Santa Ana.  Hernan will explore three elements that are crucial to producing a fine photograph, along with discussing techniques such as composition, use of color versus black and white, lighting, choosing the best time of day to shoot, locations and tools to consider (lenses, filters, tripods, etc.). Get Up and Running with Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 – February 12th at Samy’s Camera in Santa Ana.  This class is an intense introduction to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3. This Week At Samy’s EDU Jan 30 – Feb 5 2012

The first class up this week is one we recently launched for people who want to find out more about Adobe Photoshop but might not be ready to commit to a 4 session class.  Introduction to Photoshop CS5 -February 1st at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles is a great overview of what’s new in Photoshop.  Natasha will walk you through setting up Photoshop and explain some of the tool palates.  This is a great first step to getting your digital darkroom up and running.  Register Here.

Friday and Saturday is when SanDisk  brings us the Speedlight Master Class with Dave Black & Lucas Gilman.  These guys are flying in to share their Nikon flash techniques with Samy’s EDU students at the gorgeous Downtown LA Music Center facilities.  Students will get to shoot models at the metal clad Disney Music Hall, the grand lobby of the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion and the surrounding areas.  Don’t miss this one of a kind workshop in this amazing setting!  Register Here.

In Santa Ana on Sunday we have Digital Filmmaking Bootcamp with Mike Walker – February 5th.  In addition to being an amazing photographer, Mike Walker spent 15 years as a TV camera man for CBS and has several indie films under his belt.  This one day intensive workshop is geared towards digital filmmaking with DSLRs as well as high end video cameras.  Mike will take the class out for a demo shoot using an HDSLR camera and rigging from companies like Redrock Micro.  Jump into the digital cinema revolution by registering here.

Tamron starts off the week on Wednesday for their free photo seminar Simple Secrets to Better Photos  at the Fairfax EDU on Jan 26th and then again on the 27th in the Santa Ana store.  This workshop is full in both locations but you can email us to be put on a wait list.

Thursday is a big day for Canon training at the Santa Barbara store.  Here is a list of great Canon classes that are all free to attend during this event:

In Santa Ana on Saturday Jan 28th is Understanding Your Digital Camera with Art Ramirez.  UDC is a basic class for individuals who own a point-and-shoot or Digital SLR cameras and wish to learn more about navigating through all those confusing camera modes.  The class takes place from 10:15am – 1:15pm.
Understanding Your Digital Camera Level 2 follows immediately after level 1.  Level 2 is a beginner to intermediate class for those who are already familiar with their basic camera menu and want to learn how to get more out of their DSLR or advanced compact camera.
It’s that time again.  The last Sunday of every month is when we hold the wildly popular Introduction to Canon DSLRs – January 29th Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles.  This class will get you up to speed on your new Canon DSLR.  Mike Monezis will show you the in’s and out’s of how to get the most from your investment.  This class usually fills up so be sure to register if you haven’t already.  The class is $29.95 but it’s free if you purchased your Canon DSLR at Samy’s.  To get your free class send an email with your name, phone number, receipt ticket number and which camera you purchased.  We will send you a code to register online for no charge.  Register Here.

This Week at Samy’s EDU Jan 9-15, 2012

Classes are heating up for the new year this week at Samy’s Camera EDU.

Introduction to Color Management with Natasha Calzatti – January 10th at Samy’s Los Angeles:   Trying to get your photos to print what you see on the screen is difficult without understanding color calibration. Join Samy’s color specialist Natasha Calzatti as she walks you through selecting the best color space to use in Lightroom and Photoshop. Learn to use the Spyder hardware calibrator to calibrate your monitor and how to take advantage of profiles made available by paper manufacturers. This 2 hour class will take place at Samy’s Camera EDU near the Fairfax location.

Introduction to Time Lapse Photography with Blue Fier – January 11th at Samy’s Camera in Los Angeles:  Come explore the time-lapse world with Blue Fier in this introductory session. You’ll learn about the history of time lapses and see examples of how you can integrate altering time into your photography skills.

Digital Photography I with E.K. Waller – January 11th at Samy’s Los Angeles:  This is a 5-week, 3-hour class in Digital Photography, which is designed to teach the basics of shooting with a 35mm DSLR (digital single lens reflex) camera.  In addition to fine-tuning basic camera operation, students will complete technical and creative assignments.

Digital Photography II with E.K. Waller -January 12th, 2012:  This 5-week, 3-hour class is a continuation of Digital Photography I.  This class is for those students who have a basic understanding of their camera and it’s functions, exposure, depth of field, use of the shutter speed for action shots, but are looking for more challenging photographic situations to build a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of photography. Students will work with shaping and controlling natural light and using on-camera flash more effectively, as well as focusing on composition and content of the photograph.

Weekly Roundup June 6-12

This week leads off with a great new Lensbaby workshop where each participant will be assigned their own Lensbaby Composer for their camera.  We have Lensbabies for Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus and Pentax.  This is a great workshop to learn about selective focus techniques and how ton achieve that sought after artistic out of focus look.  Tuesday 6:00 PM to 10PM Register Here.

Next up is Samy’s own Deborah Cloyd for a seminar entitled How to Fund your Wanderlust: Travel writing, Art Photography, Reality Television, and a Novel.  This seminar coincides with her new book release from MIRA Books/Harlequin.  She will share how to your vacations funded by travel writing and photography gigs.  Thursday 7-9PM Register Here

The weekend is jam packed with great workshops.  First up on Saturday is Photographing the Gardens at Huntington Library.  This class will start off in the Samy’s Pasadena classroom and then move to the Huntington Library where attendees will have the opportunity to shoot with instructor Art Ramirez on hand to answer questions.  10:30-4:30pm Register Here

At the Fairfax location on Saturday is a free Spyder event with Live Printing Session.  Josh Fischer, education manager at Datacolor, and DPA Instructor, Jimmy Fikes will show you how to use Spyder color calibration tools to preserve the true colors present from camera, to monitor and thru to print. Sunday literally starts off with a bang when Samy’s employee and Dodger photographer Pat Gee shares his secrets to shooting great fireworks images like those hanging at the Dodger’s cooperate offices.  This workshop starts on Sunday where Pat will show you his work and talk about how he captured his iconic fireworks shots. The following Friday the group will meet at Elysian Park overlooking Dodger Stadium to shoot the spectacular fireworks display.  Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from a pro like Pat and to shoot Dodgers fireworks from an amazing vantage point.  Seminar is from 1:00-3:00PM on Sunday and continues Friday 6:00-10:00PM.  Register here.

Weekly Roundup 5/16-5/22

This weekend at Samy’s EDU we have some really great workshops to help kick off the summer starting with the Leica M9 Street Photography Workshop Saturday and Sunday.  Explore the rich heritage of using Leica rangefinders and find out for yourself why so many of the worlds iconic images were created using Leica’s. Whether you are wanting to sharpen your street photography skills or just get your hands on an M9, this workshop is for you.  All participants will be furnished with a state of the art Leica M9 for the shooting portion of this event.  Seating is limited so hurry and register here.

Also on Saturday is Hernan’s Field Trip to The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum.  The Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum is an unforgettable place rich with textures, colours, relics, abandoned vehicles and expansive landscapes.
Come develop your knowledge of the three C’s: colour, composition and close-up. Hernan, an accomplished and award-winning photographer and Mike Monesis, Samy’s Canon Representative will help you hone your artistic senses along with teaching techniques such as depth-of-field, macro photography, exposure, etc. in a fun and easy-to-grasp style. The day will start at a wonderful setting with vibrant colours where Hernan will demonstrate techniques to be practiced throughout the field trip.

Weekly Roundup May 9-15th

This week starts off with the opportunity to brush up on your Photoshop skills. I think most of us have pieced together a Photoshop workflow based on bits of information we’ve picked up while trying to deliver images to clients – basically the PS equivalent of hunting and pecking on a keyboard. You will end up saving time in the future by attending Natasha’s class which starts this Tuesday evening and continues for the next 3 Tuesday’s. The fully outfitted Fairfax EDU computer classroom is state of the art with Apple towers and Wacom tablets for each student. The class is limited to 12 students and there are a couple of slots left so register now.

Digital Photography I with E.K. Waller starts Wednesday May 11th, 2011
EK is a great instructor who has taught photography to over 1000 Samy’s customers over the years. Her class covers the basics of photography including camera operation and how to achieve proper exposure. There are assignments given out each week which will be shown and critiqued in class. This is a 5 week class that meets on Wednesday evenings. A DSLR camera with manual capabilities and focus is required and students will need a computer to download and view images. Register here.

Digital Photography 2 with E.K. Waller on Thursday May 12th
This class will help you take your photography to the next level. It’s a continuation of Digital Photo 1 but is open to anyone who already has a basic understanding of photography concepts like depth of field, shutter speed, focusing and exposure techniques. This class offers hands on instruction for a max of 16 students shooting homework assignments followed by critiques. From the class description:

We start with shooting Portraits with available light and use lighting techniques with fill cards, paying attention to environmental aspects, and the quality of light. We delve deeper into photography, artistically and technically, by exploring aspects of Night Photography including realistic depictions and using motion techniques. We then pursue producing the great photograph: Pictures That Tell A Story, which is the basis of all great photography. Last but not least, we delve into On-Camera Flash, with creative and technical considerations. We end the class with a hands-on studio strobe demo with lighting for portraiture. Register here.
